Description

This object is an obscure spiral barred galaxy located 60 million light years away in the constellation of Eridanus at a declination of -23 degrees. The galaxy spans 6 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 100,000 light years.

The arm structure of this galaxy is fascinating to me. There are 2 grand spiral arms which both extend about 270 degrees around from their attachment to the main bar, but each arm is quite disturbed and not continuous. This disturbance may be due to the small companion galaxy (PGC 11469) which is below and left of NGC 1187 and at the same distance away from us.

My favorite part of this image is the subtle colors of the main galaxy, ranging from blue in the outer reaches and in the bright star clusters, to yellow in the core areas, to hints of red in some disk star formation regions. In some areas throughout the disk, these colors seem to be wonderfully mixed.
